Project 7: Data Translation

For my data translation project I chose to look at something which I have a great interest in, boxing.
As previously mention on the project prior to this I have found idea generation extremely difficult due to my lack of understanding of what it is the brief is asking me to do. However, I soon settled on the idea of looking at the Top 10 Fastest Boxing Knockouts and creating an interactive-style piece.
The interactive concept was to create a chart to represent my data which would the user would be able to press the drop-down micropohones to hear an announcement of the fighters names, the venue and the speed of the knockout while a video will play the chosen fight.
Although not creating a finished piece for this idea, the concept was recieved well during my critique and my fellow students were intriged as to how the finished outcome would work.
This project for me was more about the concept than the finished outcome due to my lack of knowledge with regards interactive media however my designs for the end-piece were as this project could be taken for me.
I enjoyed this project as I was able to choose a theme which I found interesting and which I was able to explore the way in which I wanted to, as a concept for interactive media, which I hadn't looked at previously to this.

This is the mock up for the opening sequence of the interactive media:

Project 6: Wayfinding and Mapping

For this project we had to create a visual mapping communication based on real life context.
I found this project extremely difficult to generate ideas and ultimately lacked in my outcome because of this.
Despite my disappointing start to the project, and after a much needed discussion with one of my pathway tutors I finally settled upon an idea based around the route which I use to walk my dog. This then lead me to look at the different paths both me and my dog take as one is slightly more irratic and the other is more straightforward and tends to stick to the path.
From this is began making hand drawn sketches in my sketchbook which showed the two paths taken, however, I also tried the idea digitally and although my finished piece looks simple, once show in my crit session, my tutor really enjoyed the anonymity and the questionability of the work. In addition to this however, it was agreed that I needed something to add to the piece in order to "finish" it and to give it meaning, although I never got round to defining my final outcome for this project.

Overall, I found this project difficult in terms of idea generation and also idea outcomes, this is potentially due to my lack of understanding for the brief which only became apparent once I began talking to fellow students and tutors, who helped me alot.
